SPARC Europe (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), a leading organization of European research libraries, today announced the opening of nominations for the Fifth SPARC Europe Award for Outstanding Achievements in Scholarly Communications. Launched in 2006, this annual Award recognises an individual or group within Europe that has made significant advances in our understanding of the issues surrounding scholarly communications and/or in developing practical means to address the problems with the current systems.

On Wednesday, February 17, Catherine Mitchell (CDL) and Laura Cerutti (UC Press) joined us to review the progress of the UCPubS program, including the motivations behind their library-press collaboration, the specific services UCPubS provides, their outreach efforts across the campuses, the challenges they’ve encountered so far, and how other presses and libraries can build on this experience.

SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) has released a new guide and supporting Web resource exploring campus-based open-access publishing funds. Authored by SPARC Consultant Greg Tananbaum, these timely new resources survey the current North American landscape of open-access funds and explore key emerging questions on how such funds are considered and developed on college and university campuses.

Three new student films on information sharing have been voted the best by a panel of new media experts, students, and librarians in the third annual Sparky Awards. Organized by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and adopted by campuses everywhere, the Sparky Awards contest calls on entrants to creatively illustrate in a short video the value of openly sharing ideas.

David H. Carlson, Dean of Library Affairs at Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), has been elected to the position of Chair of the SPARC Steering Committee. Carlson has served as member of the Committee, which provides strategic advice and guidance to the SPARC staff, since 2008.
