In a move that completes a year-long strategic restructuring of SPARC’s operations in Europe, Dr. Alma Swan has been appointed to the position of Director of European Advocacy, and Lars Bjørnshauge has been named SPARC’s Director of European Library Relations.

Presenters have been announced for “Getting the rights right for the future of scholarly communication,” a timely panel discussion hosted by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and set for the upcoming meeting of the American Library Association (ALA) in Dallas, TX. The forum will be held Saturday, January 21, 2012 from 4:00 to 6:00 PM at the Dallas Convention Center, room A201/202.

Lars Bjørnshauge has been appointed to the role of Interim Director for SPARC Europe, Bas Savenije, Chair of the SPARC Europe Board, announced today. Bjørnshauge, formerly Director of Libraries at Lund University in Sweden and a long-standing member of the SPARC Europe Board, assumed overall management of the 93-member library organization, effective October 19, 2011.

SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) today announced a partnership with Bioline International, an online publishing service that provides open access to peer-reviewed research journals published in developing countries.

The SPARC Steering Committee, whose newest members began their three-year terms on January 1, has elected Ray English to the position of Chair. English, the Azariah Smith Root Director of Libraries at Oberlin College, has served as a SPARC Steering Committee member since 1999.
