In response to the growing demand to make research free and available to anyone with a computer and an internet connection, a diverse coalition today issued new guidelines that could usher in huge advances in the sciences, medicine, and health.

From textbooks to course materials, videos to software, journals to digital collections, Open Educational Resources (OER) are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain, or carry a license that permits their free access and use by all users. Like the Open Access movement, the aim of many OER proponents is for anyone, anytime, anywhere to be able to access and contribute to the advancement of knowledge.

SPARC has selected Melissa Hagemann, the Program Manager of the Open Access Initiative at the Open Society Institute (OSI), as the newest SPARC Innovator. Hagemann was chosen in recognition of the new possibilities that now exist for scholars, institutions, and the public since the introduction of the Open Access movement and in honor of Hagemann's seminal role in launching the movement with her OSI colleagues.
