The next level of student engagement: Open Access Week and beyond
A SPARC pre-Open Access Week event
Date: Wednesday, September 30th, 1:00 – 2:00PM Eastern

Open Access Week began as a National Day of Action organized by students. The now-annual international event, which raises awareness of Open Access among researchers, administrators, librarians, and students alike – and has been celebrated by campuses in 30 countries – was inspired by the singular energy and demand for targeted action that characterizes these young advocates.

Open Access Week continues to be an important and valuable chance to engage with students, who are ever more concerned with their ability to access scholarly research. Since the first OA day of action in 2007, students have been actively rallying their peers to get involved (in part through the SPARC Right to Research campaign); launched a Student Statement on the Right to Research, now signed by 11 national, international, and regional student groups; and formed a cross-border coalition behind the statement which met at a summit of student leaders this summer. One product of the summit is that major student groups will activate supporters on campuses everywhere during Open Access Week 2009.

Tapping into student energy, commitment, and national networks can transform library programs around faculty and campus engagement, including those planned for October.

On September 30th, please join us for a Webcast on “The next level of student engagement: Open Access Week and beyond.” Nick Shockey, SPARC’s Student Advocacy Fellow and engineer of the student summit, will discuss new ways to get student attention – including new messages and tools he’s developed, how to connect to the burgeoning student network for Open Access, and how to plug in to the student initiative for Open Access Week.

This one-hour event will be held:
